INTERNAL ATTACHMENT COMPLETION

The attachment commenced well on 21st January 2013 and lasted 8 weeks. All the required sectors of the attachment have been covered and reports submitted to the supervisors(department). The faces to be covered included the GIS,Remote Sensing and survey(vertical control, horizontal control and Cadastral survey). As we come to the end of the internal attachment,we happy to say that the attachment has been a success both to the students and to the department since all the activities have been concluded.
At the end of every attachment,a comprehensive report indicating all the activities covered during the attachment period is compiled and handed in to the supervisor for marking. The students expresses their gratitude to the department for the continued support/assistance during this period and making the session all a success.Having done all this the students are free to leave for their destinations(homes/domicile).
25th March,2013 marks the end of the internal attachment in Dedan Kimathi University of Technology(DKUT).Wish all the participants of this session a happy holiday,a fantastic Good Friday and Easter holiday.see you all in May 2013.

SURVEY PRACTICAL-internal attachment

The 3rd face of the internal attachment commenced well with vigor and high expectations by the students to conduct their Survey practicals. The first week was leveling using theodolites. The students were to level one(1) kilometer of loose bound roads around the DKUT and carry out the analysis and produce final measurements of the roads and their respective diagrammatically represented outfits. All the groups were to start at the same point(common Datum) but take different routes. There were a total of six groups conducting the task. The first day kicked off by marking the control points along routes taken by each group. The control points were to be used to the next day to carry out measurements on the roads.During measurements, the staffs were located at intervals of ten meters and the staff readings recorded.Between two control points computations were conducted to ensure error-free results and if bugs were detected, measurements between the two control points were repeated. These activities were conducted in three days and on the fourth day the students embarked on measuring and leveling the sewer lines around the campus. These marked the week one activities in survey.
Problems encountered
1.Very harsh climatically facilitated conditions(sun-burns to many students)
2.Time wastage-leading to repeating the tasks
3.incorrect measurements-due to mirage because of the sun(bright light)

Internal attachment 2013,2nd year.

23rd January marked the begginning of the internal attachment for the second years in GEGIS  and GIS.The internal attachment is one of the most valued session during the course period. This session entails equiping the students with the required skills to enable them compete better in the industry after  or during their course in campus. Its a compulsory session as each student is evaluated at the end of the attachment  and the marks/grades attained used to compute one’s final grade at the end of the course.

The attachment period kicked off well with high expectations that at the end of it all, every student will have a chance to carry out tasks in various fields such as GIS,Cartography,Remote Sensing and Survey on their own.The program has so far been good as parts of the attachment have been completed. These fields include the GIS and Cartography. These were carried out in the first weeks of the program using the ArcGIS 10.0 software. These sectors include the data collection, analysis, manipulation, storage, editing and printing out the maps where required.Due to time constraints, the students used a ready imagery to carry out the tasks. This was mainly carried out using the ArcMap 10.0 software. All the processes and tasks were carried out in trying to come up with the final product.Such processes included the digitization processses, error correction etc.Weekly reports are prepared to showcase students’ activities during the program to the supervisors.

The second part of the attachment was to start off the Remote Sensing acitivities.Remote sensing is the art of acquiring data/information about a feature/object in another location without having to be in contact with it.ERDAS 9.1 and ERDAS 2010 are the software in use for these activities. Many processes are involved in carrying out the Remote Sensing activities.such processes involve the mosaicing, subsetting etc.
This is the much that the students have done so far during this internal attachment.More to come.thanks all

Campus Swags

Its only in campuses where you meet all types of people.Students are busy doing all they can to be the best in the society.This spans from their dressing,lifestyle,knowledge on various issues and their dreams.Below are the most common swags;
Wearing Tire open-shoes "Akala"
This is a type of open-shoe that a campus dude feels comfortable to be on.The advantages of these shoes is their long life hence enabling the dude to save the cost of acquiring a new pair every now and then, ability to tackle tough terrains without tear.
AKALA is a shoes that is not sewed but fixed with nails hence cannot easily tear as you wear.AKALA is also cheap to acquire hence no much hustle.A campus dude without this pair is missing out on great product experiences.

Being a great football fans
Football is one of the best sport loved by campus dudes.Almost every dude has a football they are a fan of(mostly the English football).
These games are enough to cause chaos during matches when the students try to compete unto which game to be shown on the screen.Ever been a victim?REMEDY; Watching each game 20 minutes so that everyone in the room can be comfortable.

Having the best phone
Technology is growing fast.We are currently on an information superhighway(the internet) where everyone is eager to know whats going on.Being updated is highest priority for anyone in the networks.
Having a phone with the best specifications to keep you on top among the students is every students struggle. With the "kaloan" from HELB students are able to fight in the technology sector in campus(not all). The funniest thing is that no one knows who is on top.funny.
Present in all Weekend  extravaganzas(raves n bashes)
Its an every weekend's activity to hang out with your pals as a student in campus. Its a swag to be present all the weekends of the semesters. With pockets loaded there is "fire" in weekend celebrations as you have the might to do what you want with as many friends alongside you as possible. At this time the guys are "untouchable" just to say. When the pockets run dry,you remain alone in the race. What you can afford is just listen to music on weekends as you wait for sleep to catch up with you and leave the "wazitos" in the race. This shows how difficult it is to manage funds.

These are just a few of the swags in campus.More coming soon

GEGIS & GIS STUDENTS VISIT SURVEY OF KENYA

It was a great day for the GEGIS and GIS students from Kimathi University as they got a chance to visit the Survey of Kenya in Nairobi. This was an academic activity to enable them  interact with the industry. The sections visited was the Cartography section, photogrammetry(both the analog and digital sections),cadastral survey section and the GIS section. This is where you get to appreciate the roles of these fields in the society.

Photogrammetry is the practice of determining the geometric properties of objects from photographic images. In the photogrammetry section we were able to have a look at the analog systems and the digital systems. This includes the transition from the analog practices to the digital systems. The equipments here included the stereoplotters of different kinds.
Cartography is the science and practice of making maps. The students were able to know the map production process from the ground level (field level) until you get the final maps of an area.
In the cadastral section we were able to visualize how land is surveyed and title deeds are dealt with.
This is the identification of the land/plots in kenya.
The students were able to grasp a lot pertaining the field and they had a chance to appreciate the current status of GIS and MAP MAKING in Kenya. There was a better interaction between the staff members and the students in the organisation and their interaction and willingness to help the students was so good.We thank SOK very much for their time for us and their willingness to show us what really happens in the industry.
